Sons of Cream announce debut album Half and Half

Sons of Cream have announced their debut album, Half and Half, which Marshall Records will release on 15 January 2027. The band are Malcolm Bruce, Kofi Baker and Rob Johnson. Bruce and Baker are the sons of Cream members Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker, and Johnson plays guitar and sings.

The album has twelve tracks, split evenly between six reimagined Cream songs and six new originals. Alongside the announcement, the band have released a double single of ‘Strange Vibrations’, an original written by Bruce, and a new version of the Cream song ‘Tales of Brave Ulysses’. You can pre-order the album here.

The band recorded Half and Half at Marshall Studio, inside the Marshall Amplification factory in Milton Keynes. Bruce produced the album, with additional production from Johnson, Baker, Adam Beer and Ollie Brightman. Chris Sheldon mixed it and Christian Wright mastered it at Abbey Road Studios.

Bruce says the title reflects the album’s two aims. “We came up with the idea of ‘Half and Half’, simultaneously looking back and paying respect to the tradition that we come from as well as taking steps as a band to write and record new material. We didn’t want to make a ‘retro’ record. Even with the Cream songs we wanted to put our own stamp on the material, not play it note for note like a tribute band.”

He continues: “We are not playing it safe, copying a pre-existing model or style. That is always a risk, but as a creative choice it’s exciting to let it all hang out. As a starting point for growth.”

Johnson describes the sessions as “an excellent experience”, citing the work with Bruce and Baker and with engineers Beer and Brightman. “It was great to have spontaneous moments of tracking much of the material together but also the time and freedom to finesse the overdubs,” he says. He adds: “The studio itself was an amazing space, big and inviting and beautifully designed. The choice of amps at the studio was unlike anything else I’ve experienced. We were spoiled to be able to choose from so many world class Marshall amps.”

The band draw on blues, rock, jazz, folk and contemporary influences. The release describes them as a power trio built on equality and interplay.

Sons of Cream will tour the United States from January 2027.
