Privacy Policy

Last updated: 4 July 2026

Media Junkbox (“we”, “us”) publishes music reviews, live reports, galleries and interviews at mediajunkbox.com and through the Media Junkbox iOS app. This policy explains what data we collect on the website and in the app, why we collect it, and your rights.

What we collect

If you just read our content

Server logs

Like almost every website, our servers record standard access logs, including your IP address, browser or app identifier, pages requested and time of access. We use these logs for security and to keep the service running. They are not used to profile you.

Local caching in the app

The app stores articles and images on your device so content loads quickly and works offline. This cached data never leaves your device. You can remove it by deleting the app.

Cookies on the website

WordPress may set session cookies for logged-in users and comment authors. If enabled, Google Analytics cookies may track site usage. If we use a content-delivery network such as Cloudflare, it may set additional caching or security cookies.

We do not use advertising networks in the app and do not sell personal data. If Google AdSense or another advertising service is enabled on the website, its cookies may be used for ad serving and measuring ad performance.

If you create an account

You can browse the website and app without an account. If you sign up using an email address or Sign in with Apple, we store:

  • Your email address and display name, to operate your account. If you use Sign in with Apple, you may hide your real email address; we receive only the private relay address provided by Apple.
  • Your agreement to the Terms of Use, including when you agreed and which version you accepted.
  • Comments you post, which are displayed publicly with your display name.
  • Your saved articles, including Favorites and Read Later, so they can sync between the website and the app.
  • Safety actions you take. If you report a comment or user, we store the report, including what you reported and why, so our moderators can act on it. We aim to review reports within 24 hours. Reports are never shown to the person reported.
  • Blocks you create. If you block someone, we store that block so their content remains hidden from you throughout the app. You can manage blocks in Settings → Blocked Users. Blocking also files a report for our moderators.

We use this data only to provide these features. We do not sell it, share it with advertisers, or use it for profiling.

If you enable push notifications

If you turn on notifications in the app, we store an anonymous device token issued by Apple and the content sections you subscribe to, such as Live Reviews or Interviews. We use this information only to send those alerts.

Turning notifications off in the app or in iOS Settings stops notifications. Tokens that stop working are removed.

If you find gigs near you

The Events section can show gigs near you. If you tap Use my location, iOS asks for your permission and the app takes a single, approximate, city-level location reading.

We send only that coarse coordinate to our server as a one-off search area to retrieve nearby events from Ticketmaster. It is not stored, linked to your account or used to track you. You can skip this feature and choose a city from the list instead. You can also revoke location permission at any time in iOS Settings.

Crash reports and usage analytics in the app

We use Google Firebase, including Crashlytics and Analytics, to understand when the app crashes and broad usage patterns, such as which screens are opened and how often.

This may include a random installation identifier and device or operating-system information. It is not tied to your account or real-world identity, and we do not use it to track you across other companies’ apps or websites. Firebase is used only for crash reporting and aggregate usage analytics, never for advertising.

For information about how Firebase processes data, see Google’s Firebase privacy information.

What we do not do

  • We do not sell personal data.
  • We do not use cross-app or cross-site tracking. The iOS app’s privacy manifest declares NSPrivacyTracking = false.
  • We do not use advertising or tracking SDKs in the app. Firebase Analytics and Crashlytics are used only for aggregate usage analytics and crash reports, not advertising.
  • We do not share account data with advertisers or use it for profiling.

Embedded content

Articles may embed players and media from third parties, including YouTube, Spotify, Bandcamp, setlist.fm and Instagram. When an embed loads, that provider may set its own cookies and collect data as if you had visited its website directly. Its own privacy policy applies to that content.

In the app, embeds load only when they appear on screen inside the article you opened.

Where your data lives and how long we keep it

Account data, comments and saved lists are stored with our website hosting provider, NetCup GmbH, in the EU/UK, for as long as your account exists.

Server logs are kept for 30 days.

Push-notification tokens are kept while notifications are enabled for your device.

Deleting your account

You can delete your account at any time.

In the app, go to Profile → Account → Delete account. This removes your account, saved lists, push registrations, blocks and reports you filed from our servers. Comments are deleted or anonymised as part of the account-deletion process.

Content removed through moderation may be retained as evidence where required by law.

If your account was banned for breaking our Terms of Use, we retain a non-reversible fingerprint of the banned sign-in identity after deletion. This is a salted hash, not your email address itself, and is used solely to prevent a ban being avoided through re-registration. It is deleted if the ban is lifted.

You can also request account deletion by emailing privacy@mediajunkbox.com.

Your rights

Under UK and EU data-protection law, including the GDPR, you can ask us for a copy of your data, ask us to correct or delete it, and object to or restrict how we use it.

To exercise these rights, email privacy@mediajunkbox.com.

You also have the right to complain to your data-protection authority. In the UK, this is the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO).

Children

Media Junkbox is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their data.
