BIG|BRAVE are continuing their tour in support of their tenth album, in grief or in hope, with upcoming dates in the UK, Europe, and Japan.
The album, released via Thrill Jockey, features guitar-centred droning compositions and an electro-acoustic sound. For in grief or in hope, long-time touring bassist Liam Andrews (MY DISCO, Aicher) joined guitarist and vocalist Robin Wattie and guitarist Mathieu Ball in the studio. The band state that the pieces are layered with harmonics and tonal intricacies, with the trio’s progressions made vivid through live recording. Wattie states that her reflections during the album’s creation were on “grief and hope; death and life; cause and effect; shared experiences of being a human person.”
Recorded with Seth Manchester at Machines with Magnets, in grief or in hope includes references to BIG|BRAVE‘s earlier work. ‘the ineptitude for mutual discernment’ expands on lyrical themes from 2015’s Au De La, while ‘verdure’ echoes melodies from the title track of 2014’s Feral Verdure.
The album’s track listing is:
- ‘what may be the kindest way to leave’
- ‘a shape of shame’
- ‘the ineptitude for mutual discernment’
- ‘holding tongue’
- ‘verdure’
- ‘skin ripper’
- ‘an uttering of antipathy’
- ‘in grief or in hope’
