Fright Years took to the stage with a bold energy, further reflected through Jules Kelly’s strong vocals, that only grew as the set went on. I wasn’t familiar with this band’s music, but they had the whole crowd bobbing along and clapping throughout their engaging performance. Their set consisted of funky guitar tones, upbeat drums, groovy bass lines and catchy lyrics paired with their strong stage presence. They couldn’t have picked a better support act for Overpass, and I suggest checking out ‘Wait For Nothing‘ and ‘Every Weekend‘ to familiarise yourselves with their music. I can’t wait for them to be back in Norwich in February!
Next up in the packed-out venue was Overpass who I have been wanting to see for a few years and I completely understand the hype of this band now and why they are a festival staple.
Starting with ‘Be Good To Yourself‘ before leading into ‘Right Now‘ and unreleased ‘Sandman‘ lit up the venue with their infectious energy and got everyone singing and dancing along. Max Newbold effortlessly delivered gut-wrenching vocals and soul-crushing lyrics all evening backed up by his band, Indie Armstrong on bass, Elliot Rawlings on guitar and Jake Bishop on drums. A few stand out songs for me were ‘Stay Up‘, ‘Slow‘ and ‘3AM‘ which I found very interesting musically, they were catchy and upbeat but still with lyrics sad enough to destroy you mentally. I find their music to evoke similar feelings to Snow Patrol’s music with their soulful and emotionally vulnerable lyrics tied together with a 2000s indie rock sound while carving out space in their tunes for anthemic singalongs which is what makes their live show so good and interactive.
The setlist contained a good mix of songs from their latest EP ‘Dependent’ released in February as well as songs from their previous EP ‘From The Night’, released last February. There was a good mix of upbeat songs that commanded the crowd’s attention as well as slower songs for them to sing their hearts out to. We were also previewed four unreleased songs which seemed to be a hit, including ‘Is This Real’ and ‘Union Station’.
The fans were singing particularly loudly for ‘From The Night‘, resulting in the band stopping and just letting the crowd’s voices shine as they continued which was a really special moment. ‘Otherside of Midnight‘ and ‘Beautiful‘ were other notable fan favourites which had the loudest singalongs.
It was such a beautiful show full of emotions and great music. I am sure that they will have their moment soon and be playing large venues in no time! They honestly blew me away with their talent.
There are still a few dates left of this tour so be sure to catch them in Brighton, Exeter, and Cardiff – tickets can be purchased here.
