Rounding off the UK leg of their almost two-month-long tour, Witch Fever return to their hometown to take on Manchester’s newly established Amber’s, alongside Scotland’s Cowboy Hunters and fellow Mancunians Third Kulture. After the release of their second full-length album Fevereaten, Witch Fever are not slowing down any time soon and will follow Manchester with shows all over the continent in the coming weeks.
Third Kulture
Opening the show are Third Kulture, a three-piece hybrid rock-rap group blending modern rap and grime with energetic guitar riffs and smooth R&B vocals. “Rock music is black music”, exclaims vocalist NAMEKA, and the band certainly show us how it’s done.
Cowboy Hunters
Next up, Scottish duo Cowboy Hunters bring bonkers lyrics, big riffs, banter, and Buckfast. The pair impress the crowd by swapping instruments with each other halfway through their set with no struggle, and proving that brilliant punk songwriting loses nothing with only two band members.
Witch Fever
Kicking off their hour-long set with the opening track from Fevereaten ‘DEAD TO ME!’, Witch Fever need no time to warm up, showing us exactly why they are one of the UK’s best up-and-coming alternative acts. Very quickly, the mosh pits begin, rarely ceasing throughout the show despite the heat and sweat in the room.
After rattling through a few more from the new album, Witch Fever return to old favourites ‘Blessed Be Thy’, ‘Congregation’ and ‘Reincarnate’ to an energetic response, Vocalist Amy Hope Walpole admits she is suffering from a slight cough, you really would not know as she tears through her beautifully written lyrics with ease, backed by Alisha Yarwood’s doomy guitar riffs, Alex Thompson’s punching bass and Annabelle Joyce’s dynamic drums.
Witch Fever is a band who do what any real punk band does and stands for what matters – Walpole takes a moment to call for an end to all violence, not just in Palestine but all over the world, and an end to the rich and powerful elite that perpetrate it. After leaving the stage with ‘I SEE IT’, the band are cheered back on with calls from the crowd – “ten more songs!”. Ending the show with an impressive cover of Deftones’ ‘My Own Summer (Shove It)’,
Witch Fever convince us that they have only one direction ahead of them, up and up.
