NYC Hardcore Legends Madball Take on London – last date of the 2026 UK Tour

DSC 6248

The New York City Hardcore legends Madball arrived in the UK at the end of March for a six-night tour, culminating in a performance at London’s Underworld. It felt mandatory to go and hear what many consider to be the blueprint for modern hardcore played live on stage. Their presence in the music scene since the late 1980s has inspired countless generations of kids to form their own bands and scream their truths into the microphone.

Sunday night at the Underworld showed two distinct faces as it shifted from shy curiosity to intense commotion and wild behaviour. When I arrived at the venue to the sounds of the opening act, Tempers Fray, I did not feel bad anymore for being slightly sleepy, everyone felt a little bit tired. It was Sunday night, after all, a time when most people binge-watch their favourite TV shows and lament over going back to work the next day. Tempers Fray did, however, jump-start the crowd’s energy, and you could see a few shy moshers two-stepping at the very front. They had plenty of space while others enjoyed the music with beers in hand. I enjoyed their aggressive riffs, which in my opinion deserved a bit more insanity from the audience. The same applied to Last Wishes, who took the stage second. They simply could not get people to move.

My theory is that many of us and especially the elder millennials who grew up with Madball, were preserving their knees for the headliner. I must admit that the same applied to me. In your thirties, you simply cannot go all out for every single band. This is no reflection on the bands themselves, as their sets were flawless and the beat made heads shake while everyone watched intensely. Just it really hurts the next day!

Born From Pain, shifted something. I believe the alcohol started to kick in and people decided it was time to warm up for the final act. We finally started to see the commotion so familiar to any hardcore show. Their frontman knew exactly what to say to the sleepy crowd to rile us up. Born From Pain has been well-known in the European scene since the late nineties. Looking over my shoulder, I saw people singing along to their songs and screaming out punchy lyrics while hitting the air with their fists. Their instrumentals were angry, and the sound was delivered with the clear intention of causing a stir. The message from the stage was clear when the frontman addressed hard truths about the hardcore scene and the importance of self-expression, encouraging everyone to be themselves without fear.

Before Madball stepped onto the stage, we were treated to hip-hop classics like “X Gon’ Give It to Ya” by DMX with the bass turned right up, most likely shaking up the Underground tunnels below us. The aggressive anthem hummed in the background and was impossible to escape. It clung to you like a dog begging for food from your plate. Suddenly, the standing area in front of the stage tightened up. People appeared out of nowhere, and I could see them buzzing with anticipation. Hell broke loose when the band finally stepped out. The millennials were ready to sacrifice their limbs in the name of hardcore.

Madball was genuinely fun. Their sound brings positivity and good vibes, offering many opportunities to sing and scream about unity and staying strong when facing adversity. At the same time it is a music for the tough but good people. Theirs are the sounds of perseverance. This was my Madball debut, and I especially enjoyed their thrash influences and fast-paced instrumentals. Their set was balanced, mixing what they described as their old shit and their new shit songs. On stage, their iconic frontman, Freddy, was everyone’s friend. His connection with the audience brought a smile to your face, it was cute and made you feel good. It felt like sharing banter with an old mate. People engaged unafraid and were invited to experience the music however they felt it. The “No Stage Diving” sign right next to the stage was doing absolutely nothing, getting ignored as people jumped countless times during the hour-long set. Breaking the rules felt right. You got roughed around at the front but when you fell someone picked you up. Uncontrollably controlled chaos is something that we do in the fringes of music and Madball, as relevant as ever will continue to inspire people to pick up that mic. What they do is contagious.
