After years of playing the underdog (or under-crustacean) villain, Plankton finally gets his own big-screen moment. But rather than a triumphant expansion of his character, Plankton: The Movie takes some missteps that might leave longtime SpongeBob SquarePants fans scratching their heads. While the film delivers some fun visual moments and the occasional clever joke, it struggles to justify its runtime, feeling like a stretched-out episode with a few too many misfires.
Plankton’s obsession with stealing the Krabby Patty formula has been his defining trait for years, but this movie attempts to give him a deeper backstory, one that contradicts elements of the TV series. The film reframes his rivalry with Mr. Krabs, downplaying their previously established history as childhood friends-turned-business enemies.
