Barbie 2023 movie from Warner Bros. Pictures. Directed by Greta Gerwig has its witty humor, Throwback memories and at times can be a little uneven.
The Movie which is based around “Stereotypical” Barbie who one day starts to have a existential crisis and adventures out to the real world to discover who she is. Barbie keeps the element of childhood play. The Imagination that every child and adult did while growing up of a routine of Barbie and Ken‘s looking perfect (Apart from everybody’s weird barbie but we will circle back to her in a bit). Alongside Barbie and Ken eagle eyed fans can spot outcast/retired barbies such as Midge (Barbie’s Pregnant friend), “Growing Up” Skipper, all discontinued for their controversies making it a throwback memory for fans.
As Barbie moves through Barbie land she begins to experiences thoughts and feelings and seeks assistance from “Weird” Barbie who sends her to the real world as Barbie feels her world is falling apart and wants answers. As she take lead on her own life her ken also sneaks into the real world with her. Throughout her journey she experiences patriarchy, feminism and learns about become her own original self. While Mattel tries to get her back in her box and The Ken’s takes back over the Barbieland.
Overall this movie this quiet a hit or miss movie, A Thought there is enough elements to keep it a family friendly movie, There are adult humour points which can quite easily been picked up by young adults and adults alike. It kinda felt like although it’s meant to be a women empowerment movie at times it just falls a little flat and can get a bit too much. Trying to mix too much of this real world and Barbie Land world just gets a bit too messy. This will be a movie you will either enjoy or not and just won’t be everyone’s cup of tea.
