Yesterday’s Golden Globes ceremony was full of surprises and emotional moments that will mark it in history. Two films stood out as clear winners: “Emilia Pérez” and “The Brutalist”.
“Emilia Pérez”, a musical drama about a complex character who goes a life-changing transformation, won four awards, including Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy. The film’s song “El Mal” also won Best Original Song, reiterating that it was one of the best movies of the year.
Another highlight of the night was “The Brutalist”, which got three wins, including Best Motion Picture – Drama. Brady Corbet won Best Director for his work, while the Best Actor in a Drama went to Adrien Brody.
Fernanda Torres stole the show with her victory of Best Actress in Drama for her performance in “I’m Still Here”. Her reaction to winning was just as unexpected to us as it was to herself, as it was her first nomination and win, even joking that she had no planned speech as she was already happy to even being nominated, as tears came down her face and thanked everyone involved.
During her acceptance speech, Torres spoke about representation in this industry and what playing this character had done for her life. It was a very personal and emotional moment in her life and for the audience.
The host for the evening was Nikki Glaser, and her trademark charm and jokes shined on the stage as she moved from mentioning Sean “Diddy” Combs’ legal issues to Timothée Chalamet’s questionable facial hair choices.
But what was different and new with this year’s Golden Globes was the fresh energy and diversity of the winners. With a new voting body of journalists representing more countries from different parts of the world, was noticeable the impact on the winners selection.
Two legends were also recognized in the field: Viola Davis received the Cecil B. DeMille Award, while Ted Danson took the Carol Burnett Award at the Golden Globes’ first-ever Golden Gala.
All in all, the ceremony was a great reminder that besides all the chaos and controversies, there are still talented people working hard to bring us some of the magic of entertainment. Here to hoping that next year continues following this path!
