William Shakespeare’s classic play Macbeth is being turned into an interactive video game with a neo-noir twist. The game, called Lili, is being developed with the help of the Royal Shakespeare Company. It’s described as a “screen life thriller video game” where you get to see modern-day Lady Macbeth’s devices.
In Lili, you’ll be part of a stylized, neo-noir world in modern Iran, where surveillance and authoritarian rule are a big part of everyday life. The game combines live-action cinema with interactive elements, letting you make choices that affect Lady Macbeth’s fate. This sounds similar to the interactive thrillers made by Sam Barlow.
The Royal Shakespeare Company works with iNK Stories, a New York-based indie studio, to make the game. iNK Stories also made 1979 Revolution: Black Friday. The game stars Zar Amir as Lady Macbeth, or Lili.
